Apex Circuit Design are pleased to announce the successful delivery of our first ever street circuit, delivered in record time for our client GT Global, right in the heart of Kuala Lumpur for the KL City Grand Prix.
The circuit, 3.3 km in length and adjacent to the iconic Petronas towers, was granted an FIA Grade 3 licence and played host to a number of International Race Series with a demonstration headline event featuring 5 cars from the V8 Supercars headlining as part of a 5 year deal with the promotor. Other series that visited the circuit for this inaugural event included Lamborghini Super Trofeo, Formula Masters and, unique to the KL City Grand Prix, the KL GT City Cup.
Apex was the lead consultant and was represented by Dafydd Broom (Design Director), Rainer Buchmann (Commercial Partner Asia), and Jack Wheeler (Design Engineer) and worked tirelessly as a team in collaboration with Simon Gardini (Director of Gardini) to put together all the key components to ensure a memorable event that was enjoyed by all.
Temporary Circuits built in older city streets can be extremely complex projects with a number of challenges that must be carefully considered including track design and safety, event overlay, traffic and stakeholder management. These considerations were especially in one of Asia’s largest cities.
Broom, delighted with the positive driver and media feedback said “It was always at the forefront of our minds to develop a circuit that is first about safety, yet one which is exciting to watch and to drive. Moreover, it had to be implemented in such a way as to minimise disruption to the busy city of Kuala Lumpur”
“The Kuala Lumpur Street Circuit was particularly challenging for our team due to its location within the city’s ‘Golden Triangle’ and because of the extremely short period of time that the project had to be delivered.”
The circuit itself has been universally applauded by drivers and spectators alike. The V8 Supercars media team interviewed the Pepsi Max driver Chas Mostert who was excited about racing in front of the Petronas Towers. He said;
“It’s such an unreal track, quite funky, tight walls, you’ve got to commit a lot. It’s just fantastic to be out there, given a run and come back unscathed,”
“I don’t think there was one part of the circuit that wasn’t interesting. I had a lot of fun.”
Apex are proud to have been a part of this historic and landmark event and look forward to future years of the KL City Grand Prix!
